At the Lac Du Bonnet Minor Hockey Association, the well-being of our players extends beyond the rink. We’re committed to supporting the mental health of our young athletes, and one way we do this is by participating in the “Buddy Check for Jesse” program. This initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health among young hockey players, encouraging open conversations, and ensuring that our kids know it’s okay to ask for help.
“Buddy Check for Jesse” was created in memory of Jesse, a young hockey player who tragically lost his life to mental illness. The program’s mission is to educate and equip coaches, players, and families with the tools needed to recognize and address mental health issues. By using the power of team sports, “Buddy Check for Jesse” fosters an environment where teammates can support each other and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges.
In the upcoming season, our teams will take part in this important initiative by dedicating a practice to mental health awareness. During this practice, our players will be encouraged to wear green tape on their sticks—a symbol of mental health awareness. Coaches will lead discussions on the importance of mental health, the value of looking out for one another, and the steps players can take if they or someone they know is struggling.
Dale Weise, our U11B Head Coach, shared his thoughts on the program: “It’s very important for us to share the word and speak up about mental health with our young kids. We had a great discussion and had a great practice with our green tape.” Weise’s words highlight the significance of normalizing these conversations within our teams and ensuring that every player feels supported.
