U9 LDB Join Manitoba Moose in Hockey Fights Cancer Initiative

LDB U7 team poses with hockey fights cancer signs

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and solidarity, the U9 Lac du Bonnet Lightning youth hockey team partnered with the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose to support the annual Hockey Fights Cancer campaign.

On November 8, 2025, during their home game against the Springfield Grey at the Lac du Bonnet Centennial Arena, the young Lightning players skated onto the ice with purple tape on their sticks and helmets—a signature colour of the initiative symbolizing unity in the battle against cancer. Each player carried personalized “I Fight For” signs, honouring loved ones touched by the disease and extending support to families across the local community.

“We are incredibly proud of our players for stepping up in such a meaningful way,” said Allison Epp from the Lac Du Bonnet Minor Hockey Association.

“This wasn’t just about the game; it was about coming together to offer hope, strength, and a reminder that no one fights alone.”

The event aligned with the broader Hockey Fights Cancer program, a joint initiative between the National Hockey League (NHL), the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA), and the American Hockey League (AHL). Since its inception in 1998, the campaign has raised millions of dollars for cancer research, patient support services, and awareness efforts nationwide.

The Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets, have been longtime participants, incorporating lavender-themed warm-ups, auctions, and fan engagement activities during their own Hockey Fights Cancer night.

The U9 Lightning's participation highlights how local minor hockey programs can amplify national efforts, fostering empathy and resilience among young athletes while contributing to a larger mission.
